What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Appointment?

Children’s teeth, gums, and mouths are constantly changing and developing, so it’s essential that your child visits the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Your child’s first visit should be scheduled around their first birthday or 6 months after their first tooth erupts. This will allow us to monitor their oral health and development as they grow.

During your child’s appointment, we will perform a thorough examination to assess their oral condition. We also educate parents on proper oral hygiene techniques for children, including how to clean their child’s mouth and teeth correctly. X-rays will be taken to check for cavities or other problems if needed.

In addition to regular cleanings and exams we offer several treatments to improve your child’s smile and oral health.

Pediatric Procedures

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the tooth enamel from plaque and food particles. Sealants are commonly placed on permanent molars but can also be applied to baby teeth.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. It can be applied to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. Our dentist may recommend fluoride treatments for children at a higher risk for tooth decay.

Space Maintainers

If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely, a space maintainer may be required to keep the space open until the permanent tooth erupts. The space maintainer prevents neighboring teeth from shifting into the gap left by the missing tooth.

Regular dental visits, proper home care, and early intervention ensure your little one enjoys a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. For more information, visit Smile Center at 1080 Montlimar Dr. Mobile, AL 36608, or call (251) 494-6187.
